These UNIT Garage ATLAS rear racks are modular in design, and can be set up in a number of variations.
1) As a bare rack, with threaded bosses and stainless steel bolts for later UNIT Garage or DIY upgrades.
2) With a Universal Aluminum Plate designed to help locate straps for holding down a payload, and provide a good looking utilitarian platform to work with.
3) The ultimate upgrade: set up the rack with the UNIT Garage AL-5 Top Plate, which pulls dual duty both as a full-sized cargo carrying platform, and as a ready 3-point mechanical interface ready to accept a locking UNIT Garage 36-Liter Aluminum Top Box.
Like UNIT Garage’s ATLAS side pannier racks, these ATLAS Rear Racks are made of mandrel bent and welded 18mm stainless steel tubing with a 2mm wall thickness.
Note: The BMW 9T is one of the most popular bikes at UNIT Garage, and as such there are no fewer than three different rear rack options—two of them are compatible with the ATLAS 36L Top Box; and the third option sits in lighter-duty, more tightly constrained UNIT Garage Parcel Rack rack collection.
UNIT also still makes its Long original 9T Rear rack, which extends an extra 3 inches over the this modular medium-length option, and uses a slightly different bracket style called the AL-4.
Each ATLAS rear rack comes with a stated 10KG weight limit—which is about 22lbs, or almost exactly a 30-pack of 12-oz cans.
We suspect the “stated” aspect of the weight limitations is a hedge against liability and/or misuse, but suffice it to say the sturdiness of these ATLAS racks’ construction, combined with the high quality steel fasteners they mount up with, leave little doubt that they’re as strong and capable as any rear rack on the market today.
A nice bonus of all UNIT Garage’s ATLAS series rear racks, including the brand’s lighter-duty, less prodigious Parcel Rack options, is that they all have convenient passenger grab rails built in.
These racks are designed as a direct bolt-on utilizing a motorcycle’s factory mounting points, and in our experience they fit up easily and without drama. Quality stainless steel fasteners and any required spacers come included with every rack, as do clear instructions, and we’ve found the fitment to be as clean as (or even cleaner than) many factory OEM parts.
