Made in Italy from 1.5mm thick aluminum that’s reinforced at the corners with replaceable ABS protectors, this case is tough. But it doesn’t look like an overbuilt piece of equipment. Instead, it’s downright refined.

All the hardware, from the hinges to the latch/lock, to the strap rails across the lid, are made from electroplated stainless steel, shot-peened to a durable finish.

But just because it rocks doesn’t mean it’s made of stone. The ATLAS top box (like its matching side panniers) comes with a soft 2.5mm neoprene liner covering the lower portion of the box, ensuring that whatever precious contents you trust the box with won’t get rock-tumbled to death. A shock-cord net laced across the top of the lid helps hold in place a soft layer, gloves, and whathaveyou.

The latch comes with a keyed lock core, which can be made to match a set of side cases, and for double security the latch design has an extra set of 6mm pass-through holes to accept a padlock.

Another nice soft touch - the thick leather strap that holds the lid open. It’s a simple detail, the same that’s used on the panniers, but one that really makes this ATLAS top box a pleasure to use.

Note: This top box has evolved over the years, and is offered in two different versions.

> The latest is the “AL3” version, which comes with a 3-boss mounting plate that mounts up directly to all of UNIT's latest factory rear racks. This thick plate is designed with a downturned edge to create clearance underneath for spacers, and can fairly easily be retrofitted to a 3rd party rear rack. In this execution, the lower half of the box’s double-action latch secures the box to the bike via two pronged forks that mate into the bosses on one side of the rack, and a third boss latch point that cams closed with the lower part of the latch. The upper portion of the hinged latch mechanism operates independently to open and close the box.  The AL3 is a more modular design that we expect to see carried forward in future UNIT Garage rear racks.

> UNIT also makes the “AL4” version, which has a different attachment method (see detail photo) which is meant specifically for longer legacy rear racks from UNIT Garage that fit the BMW R9T, the Triumph 1200 XC/EX, and the BMW 1200GS. In the AL4 execution, the male part of the rack interface is mounted to the box, which keys into corresponding gaps in select UNIT Garage racks, and the lower portion of the latch comes underneath and clasps onto the rear portion of the rack's round tubing. 

> While we offer the AL3 version of this top box *without* the required corresponding baseplate, you will very much need that base plate in order to connect the box to a bike. It’s only offered a la carte for those who already have the base plate.
