Comfort wise, the Climatrek GTX boots are about as plush as boots come. They have loads of ankle support and more reinforcement at the toe and heel cup than TCX’s Street 3 sneaker series.
The overbuilt rubber rands at the toe and heel cup resemble something you'd find on an approach or full-on climbing shoe—rugged outdoor traits
They also sports a novel feature in their “GTX Surround” technology, which is a Gore-Tex liner equipped with a ventilation grill built in under the foot. TCX has experimented with this concept in the past with its taller, more tactical touring boot line, but this is the first time we’ve seen it in an everyday hybrid lace-up.
Basically, TCX engineers have built in a heatsink underneath the shoe, which works to boost breathability via airflow coming through the openings built into the sole.
So when you’re whistling down the road with your knees in the breeze, your dogs are getting extra air, too. This feature is especially handy for more aerobic efforts, like hiking or walking off the bike.
We’ve all heard of Gore-Tex before, the leading “waterproof + breathable” membrane technology that makes it possible to have a fully waterproof yet breathable jacket, glove, footwear—whatever.
But we might not all know that there are several sub-brands of the stuff.
These particular future boots use the highly breathable “Gore-Tex Extended Comfort®” variant, which was developed for high-end lightweight trail running shoes, giving the wearer the best chance of picking up some (relative) airflow in an otherwise completely waterproof shoe.
And as a side benefit of the structured vents built into the shoes, they have some natural mechanical spring to them while walking—whether that’s scrambling up a trail or tackling stairs, street crossings and sidewalk curbs in your own local urban habitat.
Do they look anything like other motorcycle footwear we’ve seen? Definitely not. But Teslas looked pretty damn different when they first came out, too. Now they just look smart. And fast.
Sidenote: Breathable in the context of Gore-Tex doesn’t mean screen door ventilation, it means it will allow moisture to escape, incrementally, so that you don’t feel like you’re wearing a plastic bag.
