This new Dyneema “Evo” model adds extra protection over its AA-rated predecessor, with a highest-in-class AAA rating, meaning that the material will withstand a 75MPH slide in a simulation.
The Secret Sauce //
The secret to the upgraded abrasion resistance is an updated Dyneema material, which is a name brand for general technology known as, ahem, Ulatra High Molecular Weight Polyethelene. Or UHWMPE for short.
The Dyneema yarn is used in both the warm and the weft of these jeans, and constitutes 60% of the material in combination with 38% cotton and 2% elastane, for stretch. All that whiz-bang textile engineering, and net/net these feel like a traditional, if somewhat heavy duty denim—in a good way.
Fit & Finish //
Besides the all-important protective upgrades, this new jean also sees some thoughtful updates and updates that make them even more comfortable and easy to wear.
The old model, while also a single-layer, came with a mesh liner throughout the entire garment, which both held the armor in place as well as provided extra air circulation. They performed just fine, but there was something about the full liner that kept them from feeling like regular everyday jeans.
The new Evo model does away with the full mesh liner, and only features the white mesh liner material at the hips and knees, to hold the armor in place. And the armor in this case is among the best we’ve seen—ergonomic and flexible Level 1 Spidi Warrior Lite armor, with Velcro at the knees for infinite adjustability.
The Orignal Dyneema Evo jeans featured low slung back pockets, so as not to interfere with the rider while in a seated position. All fine and good, but they seemed just a little too low, and they were embellished with cosmetic overstitching, drawing even more attention.
The new model loses the embellishments and tightens up the pocket design to help them fly a little further under the radar. The mark of a good riding jean is that it blends in with everyday life. And the new Dyneema Evo does a stellar job of doing just that.
Seeing is Believing //
The first Spidi Dyneema jean was one of the first AA rated products, and despite their relatively high price tag, the running joke at the shop was that once people tried them on, they just sort of “got it.”
These improved AAA-rated jeans fit fairly true to size, and the lengths have been graded. If you take a long leg, contact us for other options. If you take a short leg, plan to get the jeans hemmed—the adjustable armor helps in this regard.
But all in all, these follow the same cut as the outgoing model. For at-home try-on, feel free to order a couple of pairs if you’re between sizes.
