The fitting service involves taking a range of measurements with a proprietary cranium caliper, feeding it though the Shoei braintrust, and then applying a series of specific pads to fine tune the fit of your helmet.
We still take into account the circumferential measurement around the wearer's head, but the Shoei PFS database relies primarily on the 3-axis measurement from the caliper: distance front-to-back, side-to-side, and the relative depth of the wearer's head.
Once all the data is fed into the Shoei dealer program, including the exact helmet model being used, the system suggests a custom pad supplement that we can install temporarily and test-fit on the spot.
From there, we add a healthy dose of experience fitting hundreds of riders with helmets from Shoei (and other premium brands) to help interpret the resulting fit, make adjustments as needed.
It's a back and forth process to get to a point when everyone is satisfied, and then we apply permanent adhesive model-specific foam pads to lock in the perfect fit.
Pads are applied in combination, with hard and soft pads stacked in series around various places in the helmet to achieve an optimal fit.
There are four different zones that can be adjusted — front, back, sides (both upper and lower) and top.
Supplemental PFS pads can range from as thin as 1-hard/1-soft, to multiple layers of both densities. Regardless of the number of pads ultimately used, we maintain a flat fee for the service.
A full PFS fitting takes anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, or more if we're working on a busy weekend afternoon.
Shoei's suggested retail price for this process is $60 when purchased with a new Shoei helmet, and $80 for a re-fit of an older helmet. We charge the same flat rate whether you're buying a new Shoei, or already own a Shoei, and want to dial in the fit.
While Shoei supports pads going back to the RF-1100 model, our own in-store policy is we won't work on any helmet that's more than 5 years past the date of manufacture.
The Shoei Personal Fit System is, of course, an in-store only service. If checking out online, be sure to select "in store pickup."
We can also add this service to your in-store bill at the cash register the day of the fitting.
Use this product page if you want to purchase it in advance, or if you're looking to pay forward the service as a gift for a Shoei wearer.
