The shell of the Explorer jacket is made from a medium-weight cotton fabric with an inner beeswax coating that’s woven tightly to keep out wind and water.
The fabric will do a decent job in a slide, but the real heavy lifting in the abrasion-protection department comes by way of the full-sleeve XTM Fiber liner, which helps give this unassuming looking garment a full AAA safety rating—meaning it’s game for a slide up to 75MPH.*
*In laboratory conditions, self-testing not recommended
It’s not a fully waterproof jacket, however, so it can comfortably be worn even into the winter months. The full XTM (basically: Kevlar + Cordura) liner insulates both form the asphalt and from the cold, although this is really a year-round jacket.
And to state the obvious, it has epaulets at the shoulders. That might be a sartorial bridge too far for some, but with specs like this, we couldn’t say no.
The front zipper has additional wind protection thanks to an integrated storm flap, and the Explorer’s four generous pockets offer plenty of storage, and the lower two double as handwarmer pockets. Win.
