When we heard Aether was coming out with a mesh summer motorcycle jacket, we knew it would be good. And the all-new Draft jacket does not disappoint. Aether has a well-earned reputation for ultra-capable, yet equally ultra-understated designs. And the new Draft is no exception.
First, a disclaimer: mesh motorcycle jackets make us squeamish. We’ve heard horror stories of melted Joe Rocket jackets being wire-brushed out of skin in the emergency room.
Enter the Draft, an abrasion-resistant mesh that’s backed up leather reinforcements up the forearm, heavy-duty Japanese Field Nylon used across the yoke and shoulders.
It’s reinforced for weather, too, with a brilliant wind- and water-repellent shell that is as blessedly free of gaudy logos as it is well-built. It has taped seams, tactfully placed reflective striping, and minimalist construction that allows the user to roll it up and stash it in the rabbit pocket across the back of the jacket.
We particularly like the pass-through pockets built into the rain layer, allowing the wearer to get some ventilation while wearing both layers, as well as allowing access to the zippered pockets built into the main jacket.
On the road, the Draft offers “screen-door” breathability. The significant leather overlays going up the elbows hardly hamper air circulation, thanks to a stripe of mesh that extends all the way down to the cuff along the inside of the non-critical inner part of the arm.
Leather trim at the collar and pocket welts help balance out the design, and plenty of zippered pockets make this a very capable, yet still minimalist, everyday summer riding jacket.
Yes—even those summer days that start or end with cooler weather, thanks to the discreet and p wind and rain shell that stows easily in the rabbit pocket, and helps extend the Draft’s useable life from spring through fall.
As with all Aether jackets (men’s and women’s), the Draft comes with a complete 5-piece D3O armor complement, with CE Level 1 armored at the shoulders, elbows and back.
