We modeled this tool roll after the best known example of the breed: the factory tool kit that came in the under-seat tool tray of BMW's classic air-cooled twins.
The legendary reliability of these old bikes owes no small part to their smart original toolkits, which came with everything an enterprising owner would need to complete regular maintenance tasks.
But after decades of service many of these bikes' original tool rolls, which were made from a cheap pleather material, have long since started deteriorating. And 30 to 50 years later, many a 10mm wrench has gone missing.
Enter: The Union Garage Tool Roll, built from pliable and durable two-ply 10.10oz Martexin waxed canvas, and trimmed with leather binding and reinforced thick leather corners—the same leather Vanson uses to make our jackets.
Each roll is handmade in New York City by the same solitary craftsman who’s been making them for us since we launched the first version, early in the Brooklyn days.
One can find used BMW tool rolls on eBay in various states of repair. Or, splurge for this fully stocked replacement. It works as a fantastic gift for a motorcycle loving loved one. Or for yourself. Because you're worth it, and quality tools are worth investing in.
While we've specifically included two 12mm open end wrenches for the task of adjusting the valves on a BMW airhead, this kit is universal enough to work with any metric motorcycle.

The star of the show here is the full flight of Heyco open-end wrenches—drop-forged steel DIN spec tools that range range in size from 8mm (choke cable lock nuts) to 22mm (axle nuts, engine mount bolts). They're the same familiar design found in original BMW tool kits. The only difference is Heyco-made wrenches in the OEM kits were plated wrenches, whereas ours have a black phosphate finish, which offers superior grip when exposed to oil or grease.

Besides the tool wrap itself, we’ve also addressed some other weak points of the original BMW kits, like the kludgy Allen keys and the chunky OEM pliers.
We upgraded these components with professional-grade US-forged Bondhus Allen keys with ball-ends on the long end, and a sharp, square edge on the other. And we sourced a quality set of steel slip-joint pliers, which adjust from zero to 40mm. These knockoff Knipex are precise enough to trust with vintage fasteners, and heavy-duty enough to stand in as a hammer when called for.
We’ve also included a small folding needle nose plier, for, say, reaching fuses at the back of the headlight shell, or any other number of odd jobs. Bonus: this little folding tool comes with a knife, too.
Measuring and diagnostic tools include a full 32-blade metric feeler gauge set, a US made 0-50PSI tire pressure gauge, and a small packable 12-volt test light, for setting static timing and/or chasing down electrical gremlins.
We’ve ditched a few items from previous versions, namely the somewhat aspirational tire levers. The original BMW rolls came with paltry 5" tire spoons. We previously spec'd these rolls with 7" levers, claiming some improvement, but if you're really planning to change a tire on the road, pack some dish soap and a real set of levers.
And instead of the 1/4” drive sockets we’ve used in the past, we opted this time for the more robust 3/8” socket standard, driven here by a modular folding T-handle with a long steel shank that accepts both 3/8 sockets and standard 6mm hex bits. This latest roll includes a genuine shop-grade 13/16" spark plug socket, instead of the stamped steel emergency plug wrench previously included.
Also upgraded: the LED flashlight, which now has 4 modes across two LED elements, and a handy magnetic pickup to boot. Good for peering into the timing hole, setting up as a work light, or positioning as an emergency flasher while working on a bike under an overpass at night, in the rain, because you neglected to maintain your carbs before a big trip. Hypothetically.
