The Alpinus GTX pant offers fully armored, AA-rated protection from the road; Gore-Tex protection from the elements; and thanks to two high entry zippers can be put on (even while wearing taller boots) in seconds.
Regardless of the post mortem on why these pants havne’t sold super well to date, REVIT has now moved them to closeout status, and at this sale price, and now that we’ve had a chance to put in some cold-weather miles with this product, we’re doubling down.
“Alpinus” is a Latin adjective that translates to “pertaining to the Alps.“ It’s also maybe the worst thing you could name a men’s pant in the American-English market, but it’s too good a product to be deterred by snickers or d*ck jokes. Instead, embrace the Alpinus!
After all these pants are certainly capable of conquering Alps mountain passes, with integrated armor, AA abrasion resistance, and Gore-Tex waterproofing. But they’re also ideal city/commuter pants, offering easy entry and speedy, stripper-like egress.
Looking back, even at the original $599 price these pants offer a lot of value and versatility. And now at the $450 closeout price, we feel like every serious rider, yes even those in SoCal who hardly ever rain, should consider adding a pair of these, dare we say, perfect commuter pants, to their gear closet.
The pants themselves are very straightforward. They have two thigh-high inseam zippers that allow the rider to slip into them without taking off even a high motorcycle boot.
The pants are made from a 3L 400-denier Gore-Tex fabric that’s both abrasion resistant and Gore-Tex certified waterproof.
For fine-tuning the fit, there’s a built-in waist belt adjustment with cam buckles on each hip, and a Velcro gusset at the leg opening to create a tight seal around your boot.
Unlike other pants in this class, we don’t find these to have overly large leg openings, and probably wouldn’t bother with cinching the cuff down any further unless it was really pissing rain.
Throw in some monkey-butt grip patches to keep you from sliding around on a wet saddle, and a generous waterproof cargo on the top of the right leg, and this pant is complete.
The Alpinus GTX Commuter Pant comes with Level 1 SEESMART hip protectors, and Level 2 SEEFLEX knee armor.
Note, the knee armor pocket is patched onto the outside of the pants’ shell, so as not to mess with its holy Gore-Tex waterproofing. The armor installs and removes via an external zipper tucked into a pleat under the pocket. It is non adjustable, and will feel too low while walking around. We’ve found that once on the bike it sockets into place correctly thanks to the cupped nature of the REVIT SEELFLEX armor.
But consider another way to use these pants—ditch the armor altogether and use these as supercharged foul weather overprints, relying on the armor built into your daily riding jeans.
With the armor installed we’ve found these pants still pack down pretty tight for storage, and without it they’ll pack down even tighter, and can be used exclusively as a rain and extra-abrasion-resistant overspent, on top of armored non-waterproof jeans.
When you consider that our best Gore-Tex rain pant, the Forecast pants from KLIM, sell for an admittedly nosebleed steep $250 (which is the going rate for backpacker-grade Gore-Tex PacLite, but still), then the value of this wunderpant from REVIT comes in to focus.
BOTTOM LINE: This is one of the most functional, to-the-point products we've seen from any manufacturer. But we only have a finite supply so don't miss out.
Like all REVIT products, the fit seems to be modeled after a tall and slender Dutchman. Factor that in and if you're between sizes, size up. Otherwise these fit fairly true to size and are a little more generous than other REVIT pants as they are designed to go over an existing pant.
*CLOSEOUT NOTE: This product is eligible for return for store credit or exchange only. Long and Short sizes are a final sale - sorry!
