The Shield jeans come with clandestine micro-zippers on the outside of each leg, which make it easy for the wearer to install or remove the (included) knee armor, without the need to take the pants off. The Knox Microlock hip armor fits into sewn-in pockets, and is also included in the price of the pants.

The secret to the Shield Jean sauce is an increasingly familiar acronym in the motorcycle gear world: UHMWPE. Short for “Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene,” this miracle material is 40 percent stronger than aramid (AKA Kevlar), and 15 percent stronger than steel.

The real take-home here is that this material lets manufacturers build single-layer protective motorcycle jeans.

This is the latest and most welcome trend we’ve seen in motorcycle jeans, and anyone who’s experienced summer sweat-through with double-layered Kevlar-lined pants (aka, a Kevlar Diaper), knows that sometimes less can be more.

This isn’t wholly new technology. Other brands of UHMWPE include Dyneema (used by Atwyld and Spidi) and Armalith (used by Rokker).

These are all different companies skinning the same cat by combining high-strength synthetic fibers with cotton to disguise UHMWPE quite credibly as standard denim.

For the Shield jeans, Knox has teamed up with a company called Spectra to debut a brand new blend of UHMWPE. In addition to surviving the 75mph torture test required of AAA jeans, this Spectra version of UHMWPE also yields some stretch, moisture repellency, and Knox claims it’ll help keep the rider cool, too. Plus, it’s rated as non-irritating and hypoallergenic.

So, what’s not to love? The fit seems off by about a size. But that’s easily remedied. Go up one size for best results. If you can’t make it to the store for a try-on, feel free to order two sizes and we’ll facilitate the return with an at-cost shipping label included in the box.

Aside from the size grading, and the fact these jeans are not yet offered in black, our only other peccadillo is the inexplicably divided rear pocket. Why you’d want a vertical stitch in the middle of your back pocket is beyond us, but we’ve proven that with a seam ripper and a couple minutes of concentrated effort the divider can be removed and you can get on with your life with full dual-rear-pocket functionality.

*Sizing Note: These jeans run snug. Yes, there is some stretch to the material, but we’ve still found it best to go an entire size up from your normal jeans size. IE: If you’re a 32 waist, try the 34. Each jean comes with a 33” length, which can be hemmed. No “Long” or “Short” sizes are offered at this time.

  • Spectra single-layer stretch Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) construction

This single-layer Knox Shield jean is among the first to achieve the “AAA” CE rating—which means that it passes a medley of impact, seam-burst, and abrasion tests, and is rated for up to a 75mph slide. More impressive yet, Knox has managed to achieve these results AND make it look like a normal, 5-pocket, quality denim jean. Read More Read More
