Each PlatePuller is anodized black and is offered with an optional laser-etched Union Garage logo, or in anonymous black. We also offer them un-drilled, for custom mounting in the home garage.
Designed to fit any U.S. motorcycle license plate, the PlatePuller is a cinch to install with the included hardware.
A strip of velcro is included as a spacer, but we've found that giving the plate a slight bow will help it act like a spring, and hold fast inside the track. On some bikes, only the top two mounting holes will line up with the factory bracket. This is more than sufficient.
On its face, this product is an elegant way to fasten your plate to your motorcycle, and remove it easily, before someone else does.
It's also a great way to get out of a parking ticket if, say, you're running into a store real quick, and are okay with a flexible understanding of municipal parking meter laws.
These were very popular in NYC in the 20-oughts and 20-tens, before the NYPD started cracking down.
The loophole, while risky, is still there to exploit: regular meter cops don't or won't take the time to find the VIN number on your bike to issue a ticket. That might require calling a supervisor, or otherwise taking extra time, so we've observed that as long as you're not parked like a total jerk, most of the time these PlatePullers worked like a charm. The meter reader passes bike right by in favor of mis-parked cars, which have handy barcodes in the windows to easily scan.
Of course, there's always the risk of coming back to find your bike towed, or ticketed if you've run afoul of a determined meter reader. So pull your plate with discretion.
After a couple years out of stock, and more than a few inquiries, we decided to make another run of these as much for sentimental as for practical reasons. They really are a great way to keep your plate on your bike, whether or not you intend to skirt local parking laws.
Mike C., who makes them for us, and continues to run platepuller.com (if you want to shop other designs, or get one made custom) came up with this product as a side project, answering the need of NYC motorcyclists who were making due with Velcro.
The story goes that Mike's old shop teacher still handles the production machining of these units, and Mike does the laser etching in-house.
