It offers the same great look, feel and function shared by many a waxed motorcycle jacket, with its 8oz Scottish-made Haley Stevensons cotton that build character as it wears in. But there’s a lot more to this jacket than another heritage re-hash.
For starters, the jacket has subtlety integrated zippered vents—two on the biceps, and two on the back just under the arms. It’s also got an internal Reissa waterproof internal liner, and a removable 100g thermal liner—making it game for a variety of conditions.
Most notably perhaps—and ambitiously, on Merlin’s part—the Stafford is designed to work with a Merlin-branded Integrated Airbag System, which connects like a backpack directly through the jacket shell to cinch down tight. Unlike the Moto-GP grade wireless airbag found in Alpinestars Tech Air system, the Merlin airbag relies on a physical tether (affixed to a seat strap), to trigger the airbag. Merlin claims an 80 millisecond deployment time once triggered, and the airbag extends up behind the wears helmet, and down below the tailbone.
This three-season waxed cotton jacket is ready for pretty much any kind of weather you can throw at it. And in the event you throw yourself at the road, the tether-triggered air bag promised enhanced back and tailbone protection over a standard slip-in back protector.
The Stafford comes with CE Level 1 shoulder and back protection, as well as a 30x40cm sleeve for a standard back protector—and if you don’t go for the airbag option we recommend the CE Level 1 D3O Viper size Medium.
