NOTE: The 1st Generation Bowtex Elite AAA Leggings have been discontinued, and we anxiously await the arrival of the new AAA-rated Bowtex Dyneema Elite Leggings V2, in Mid May, 2023, which feature a more true-to-size fit, a drawstring waistband, and the same armor and AAA abrasion rating.
Now, we don’t recommend putting this claim to the test. And if you do, we don’t really advise wearing these pants on their own, but underneath some—any—sort of shell, like your favorite motorcycle jeans, or even standard-issue cotton denim jeans.
The secret of these stretchy, road-proof pants is their 32-percent Dyneema construction.
Dyneema is a brand name for a generic technology – UHMWPE, which is a tongue twister of textile tech that stands for Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene.
This wunder-fabric breathes exceptionally well, and has a cool “feel” to it thanks to its slippery white interior. But when the rubber hits the road this material withstands road abrasion better than Kevlar and even some leathers.
On top of the abrasion rating these pants also come with super supple and flexible Level 2 Sas-Tec hip and knee armor.
Part of the requirement for achieving the AAA rating is that the garment includes Level 2 armor. The same pockets easily will house Level 1 armor, which will be slightly thinner an offer even more mobility – something like the D3O Ghost armor works great in this application.
Flip through the images for a quick-and-dirty size chart. These pants have loads of stretch in them and if at all between sizes and we recommend going down a size.
For colder-weather riding, we still highly recommend the Bowtex Essentials, a Kevlar-based version of this same concept, which carries a AA rating, which we’re 100% OK with as they’ll 100% be worn under another pant. And a benefit (or liability, in the summer) of the Essentials pants is that they offer extra thermal insulation when riding in frigid temps.
